Inside the Lucullus PIMS.
Lucullus PIMS is a Process Information Management System for bioprocess development, scale-up and production — the software backbone that monitors, controls and analyses bioreactor processes across the full development lifecycle. Where SCADA systems handle real-time control and ELN tools handle documentation, Lucullus PIMS does both — and adds Design of Experiments, recipe management, media tracking, parallel-bioreactor orchestration and automated batch reporting on top. It runs across any bioreactor brand and any cultivation volume, turning the ever-increasing data flow from modern parallel bioreactor fleets into structured, auditable process knowledge.
Built with Excellence and Experience.
Lucullus PIMS is engineered by SecureCell , and integrates natively with the full Applikon Autoclavable Glass Bioreactor — from MiniBio at sub-litre scale through Applikon Autoclavable Glass Bioreactor, BioBench, BioPilot, BioProduction and the AppliFlex ST single-use range. But the software is brand-agnostic by design: Lucullus runs equally well on third-party bioreactors and mixed-fleet pilot plants, where consolidating data across multiple manufacturers is exactly the point.
Ease of Setup with Advanced Process Control
Lucullus PIMS is available in three editions to match the deployment scale of your operation — from a single-user lab installation to a multi-site enterprise rollout.
- 1 Lucullus Stand-alone — single-workstation install — for single-user lab installations, individual research groups and project-scale pilot work.
- 2 Lucullus Client-server — networked install with central database — for multi-user pilot plants, process-development groups and shared bioreactor fleets.
- 3 Lucullus Enterprise — multi-site with full audit-trail and validation — for regulated production environments, multi-site CDMOs and GxP-targeted bioprocesses.
All three Lucullus editions share the same Idea-to-Report workflow architecture, the same recipe model and the same data structure — so a process developed on a Stand-alone installation transfers cleanly into a Client-server or Enterprise environment without re-engineering.

Research
Single-user laboratory installations, individual research groups and project-scale screening campaigns benefit from Lucullus PIMS’s structured recipe management, DoE integration and parallel-bioreactor orchestration — without the operational overhead of a multi-user deployment. The Stand-alone edition is the natural fit at this scope: full Idea-to-Report workflow on a single workstation, immediate value from the first campaign, no IT-infrastructure setup required.
Process Development
Multi-user process-development groups and shared bioreactor fleets across pilot plants benefit from centralised recipe management, cross-team data visibility and consolidated DoE planning. The Client-server edition runs Lucullus as a shared platform across the group, with a central database that lets the whole team work from the same recipes, the same historical-data overlays and the same at-line analyser feeds.
Pilot
Pilot-plant operations running multi-bioreactor campaigns at scale need orchestration that scales with them — parallel-process monitoring across the fleet, integrated at-line analyser readings, real-time comparison of running processes, and reproducible recipes that carry from process-development scale onto pilot. Lucullus runs the full pilot-plant workflow on either the Client-server or Enterprise editions, depending on regulatory posture.
Production
Regulated cGMP production environments and multi-site CDMOs need audit-trail-ready logging, full validation support, ISA S88 compliance and 21 CFR Part 11 readiness. The Enterprise edition delivers that — recipe revision control, electronic batch records, multi-site deployment, automated batch reporting at run completion, and the qualification package depth that regulated production requires.

Bioreactor-agnostic by design
Most bioprocess software is built around a single bioreactor manufacturer’s hardware. Lucullus PIMS is built differently. Process information can be generated from any bioreactor brand and any cultivation volume — from sub-millilitre screening systems through bench, pilot and production scale. For pilot plants and CDMOs operating mixed-fleet environments, that’s the difference between consolidated process knowledge and a patchwork of vendor-specific export files.
The at-line analyzer integration completes the picture: Lucullus pulls data automatically from Vi-Cell, Nova pHOx, Nova Flex and other at-line instruments via barcode tagging, so cell-density, metabolite and gas-analysis readings flow into the same database as the in-line bioreactor sensor data. Cross-platform process comparisons happen in one tool, not three.
Built for regulated bioprocesses
Lucullus PIMS is designed for validatable fast-track development and basic-research-to-batch-record workflows that need to survive an audit. Recipes define process control strategy in a structured Step Chain language with looping, branching and variable computation — making every process change reviewable and traceable. Compound and ingredient management with barcode-tagged lots ensures media component traceability across the campaign. Automated batch reports generate audit-trail-ready documentation at the end of every run. Alarm management runs through notification, email and SMS channels for real-time process oversight without permanent operator presence.
For research environments stepping toward GMP, the Enterprise edition adds the full validation and multi-site infrastructure required for regulated production — letting the same software stack carry a process from initial DoE screen through to clinical batch records without a platform migration.
From Idea to Report — the Lucullus workflow
Lucullus PIMS organises bioprocess work in five phases — the same five phases that structure the software’s user interface, and that consolidate capabilities most bioprocess teams currently spread across three or four separate tools. Every campaign in Lucullus moves through this sequence:
Idea & Recipe. Capture the process control strategy in a structured recipe. Define the Step Chain — a programming-like language allowing looping, branching and computed variables — that drives execution. Specify the reactor and devices the recipe will run against. Integrate alarms (notification, email, SMS) at the points in the recipe where they matter.
Planning. Schedule recipes against the bioreactor calendar via a reactor planning interface that manages parallel experiments and prevents double-bookings. Integrate Design of Experiments (DoE) matrices into the planning layer to drive structured experimental design directly from the recipe. Manage sample plans, define sampling methods, and prepare and label sample tubes via barcode printing. Configure at-line analyzer integrations (Vi-Cell, Nova pHOx, Nova Flex) so analyser readings flow into the database automatically. Assign media and feeds; trigger their preparation.
Preparation. Manage compound and ingredient storage with barcode-tagged lots. Generate and print lot labels from recipes. Monitor compound usage. Automate the media kitchen via integrated pH meters and scales. Select lots at process start using a barcode scanner. Optimise media formulations across campaigns.
Execution. Run the campaign from the locked recipe under full SCADA supervisory control across the bioreactor fleet. Launch and monitor multiple bioreactors simultaneously from one console — single-bioreactor and parallel-bioreactor runs logged into the same structured database. Compare different running processes in real time via overlay graphs. Visualise hardware and port configuration through integrated P&I diagrams.
Evaluation. Turn raw data into process knowledge through data mining across the historical database. Visualise, export and overlay graphs and tables for reports and presentations. Define reusable evaluation sequences that carry across campaigns. Generate batch reports automatically at run completion — audit-trail-ready, no manual report-writing in the campaign-end window.
For teams currently bridging spreadsheets, ELNs, vendor SCADA and standalone DoE tools into one workflow by hand, the consolidation alone often justifies the migration.
